What is Lipedema?

Lipedema is a chronic condition characterized by the abnormal accumulation of fat cells, primarily in the legs, thighs, and sometimes arms. Unlike regular fat, lipedema fat is painful, doesn't respond to diet and exercise alone, and creates a distinct symmetrical pattern.

Do You Think You Have It? Common Symptoms:

  • Symmetrical fat deposits in legs, thighs, or arms (both sides affected equally)
  • Pain, tenderness, or aching in affected areas
  • Easy bruising without significant trauma
  • Swelling that worsens throughout the day or with standing
  • "Column-like" legs with fat stopping at ankles (feet usually unaffected)
  • Soft, nodular texture when you touch the affected areas
  • Fat that doesn't respond to diet and exercise
  • Family history of similar symptoms (often hereditary)
  • Worsening with hormonal changes (puberty, pregnancy, menopause)
